A simple practice routine
- Pick only three to five letters for one session.
- Say the letter name, then listen to the example word.
- Repeat the first sound slowly.
- Think of another word beginning with that sound.
- Return to the same letters on another day before adding more.
Letter names and sounds are not always identical
English spelling has exceptions, and some letters can represent more than one sound. These cards are an introduction to common first sounds, not a complete phonics programme. For letters such as C, G, X and vowel letters, adults can point out that other words may sound different.
For parents and caregivers
Keep the activity playful. If a child cannot think of a new example, offer two choices rather than turning the task into a test. Pair the cards with real objects, picture books or a short alphabet game to make the sound easier to remember.
