Learning ideas for ages 4–6
Children in the preschool and early-primary years can often manage short sequences, simple rules and more independent choices. Useful topics include first sounds, letter matching, counting, comparing numbers, simple addition, sorting, patterns and memory.
One skill at a time
Pick a focus for the session instead of jumping randomly between many games. A phonics session might include one first-letter game and a short story. A maths session might pair a number comparison game with counting toys or household objects.
Ask for one explanation
After a correct answer, occasionally ask “How did you know?” The answer does not need to be long. A short explanation shows whether the child noticed the sound, number or pattern rather than simply guessing.
